“How’s our girl doing?” Dave whispered.
He was quiet but Sebastian shushed him anyway. “Just drifted off for good. It took me awhile to get her to calm down tonight. She kept waking up every time I would lay her down in the crib “
“I’m telling you. It’s that mobile you made. It catches too much light. It’s blinding.”
“Oh forgive me for trying to be crafty and put your collection of ancient CDs that you refuse to throw out to good use.” Sebastian wasn’t nearly as put out as his tone implied and Dave knew it. It was difficult for him to keep an ill temper at the best of times, but it was especially hard when his eyes were filled with the perfect sight of their daughter. “I think it’s more likely that she’s scared of that monstrosity you put in there with her.”
“It’s not a monstrosity. It’s a teddy bear. It’s the staple of a normal childhood,” Dave explained patiently, with the air of someone who had made the argument countless times before—which, in fact, he had.
“Not everyone likes bears,” Sebastian insisted, refusing to be swayed, though he looked like he may have been swallowing a smile and arguing for the fun of it.
Dave poked his husband’s ribs playfully. “You like bears.”
Sebastian let his smile break free. “You’re right. I do like bears.” He stepped back from the crib, grabbed Dave by the hand, and started to lead him to the door. “Why don’t you let your daughter sleep in peace and come let me show you just how much I like bears.”
